NAHL Showcase Tournament: Day 1 recap

Mark Messier, left, and NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld announced on Wednesday that The Messier Project has been named the Official Helmet Supplier of the NAHL.

The first day of the four-day North American Hockey League (NAHL) Showcase Tournament, sponsored by SBK Hockey, wrapped up on Wednesday, Sept. 15.

Alaska Avalanche 8 - Aberdeen Wings 5

Forward Zach Smith tallied a goal and two assists as the Avalanche downed the Wings, 8-5. Seth Johnson added a pair of goals, including the game-winner, and goaltender Landon Peterson made 27 saves.

Traverse City North Stars 1 – Corpus Christi Ice Rays 0

Traverse City goaltender Tyler Marble turned aside all 17 shots he faced as the North Stars blanked the Ice Rays, 1-0. Forward Eric Fragoso connected for the only goal of the game.

Amarillo Bulls 4 – Michigan Warriors 3

Forward Joe Koziak (game-winner) and defenseman Derek Hills each tallied a goal and an assist in the Bulls’ 4-3 triumph over Michigan.  Netminder Mac Haight stopped 34 shots.

Austin Bruins 4 – Fairbanks Ice Dogs 3 (SO)

Defenseman Trevor Waldoch put home a goal and an assist in regulation, along with a shootout marker, in Austin’s 4-3 shootout win over Fairbanks. In goal for the Bruins, Keegan Asmundson made 37 saves in regulation and overtime and three of four in the shootout.

Bismarck Bobcats 7 – Fresno Monsters 2

Forward Nikolaj Rosenthal struck for a pair of goals and assisted on forward Daniel Zawacki’s game-winner as the Bobcats downed the Monsters, 7-2.  Between the pipes, Dartmouth College (ECAC) recruit Ryan Faragher stopped 23 shots.

“This is the kind of start our team was looking for, and I don’t just mean the goals,” said Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie. “The biggest thing I wanted our guys to do is compete. It’s hard to judge much in the first week of the regular season, except for effort, and our team gave a great effort all day.”

Wichita Falls Wildcats 8 – Chicago Hitmen 1

Forward Dakota Kiecha unleashed for two goals and two assists as Wichita Falls dropped Chicago, 8-1. Forward Ryan Frost added three assists in the win, and goaltender Tyler Green steered aside 33 shots.

Coulee Region Chill 5 – Port Huron Fighting Falcons 2

Forward Mickey Knox potted two goals, including the game-winner (shorthanded), and forward Chris Hughes added a goal and an assist in the Chill’s 5-2 triumph over the Fighting Falcons. In goal, Paul Moberg made 24 saves.

St. Louis Bandits 3 – Dawson Creek Rage 0

Goaltender Ian O’Brien stopped all 22 shots he faced as the Bandits shut out the Rage, 3-0.  Forward Chris Ciotti tallied a pair of goals, and defenseman Kevin Zehnder picked up two assists.

Janesville Jets 7 – New Mexico Mustangs 0

Netminder David Chapin turned back all 14 shots he faced and Truman Landowski rang up a goal and two assists in the Jets’ 7-0 victory over the Mustangs.

Kenai River Brown Bears 4 - Springfield Jr. Blues 1

Forward Brad Duwe put home a goal and assisted on forward Doug Beck’s game-winning marker as the Brown Bears bested the Jr. Blues, 4-1.  In goal, Josh Benton made 22 saves.

Wenatchee Wild 5 – Owatonna Express 3

Defenseman Zach Frye connected for a goal and two assists and forward Michael Di Puma added a pair of goals in the Wild’s 5-3 triumph over the Express.  Brandon Jaeger stopped 25 shots in goal.

Topeka RoadRunners 6 – Alexandria Blizzard 4


Forwards Kevin Novakovich and Justin Hussar each recorded a pair of goals as Topeka bested Alexandria, 6-4. Forward Michael Hill tallied a goal and two assists, and goaltender Eric Rohrkemper made 15 saves.

Motor City Metal Jackets 5 – Texas Tornado 4

Forward Cody Wydo’s overtime goal – his second of the game – lifted the Metal Jackets to a 5-4 victory over the Tornado.  Forward RJ Kleiman added three assists in the win, and goaltender Max Milosek turned back 50 shots.
